Laphroaig 10 Year Old is the signature expression from one of Islay's most distinctive distilleries. Matured for ten years in ex-bourbon barrels, its character is shaped by heavily peated malt and a style that has become synonymous with medicinal smoke, seaweed and the rugged character of Islay. Beneath the intensity of the peat lies a surprising sweetness, with vanilla and gentle oak from the bourbon casks balancing the smoke and maritime character. Bold and uncompromising, Laphroaig 10 remains one of the clearest introductions to heavily peated Islay whisky.
Our Take
The medicinal character is unmistakably Laphroaig, but there's much more underneath the initial hit of peat. Sweetness and an unexpected savoury character emerge with time in the glass, while the smoke on the palate is surprisingly restrained.
